When I first started making incense, I dove in headfirst, no looking back, no guidance, and no F’s given whatsoever. I still do that. I do the same with perfume making, soapmaking, gardening, cooking, crafts. I’m an all-in or all-out kind of gal. I think anyone exploring incense making as a calling or a business should approach it with passion and reverence for the materials and not seek to just make a buck. Sure, there are a lot of incense businesses that are just that — businesses, and there isn’t anything wrong with that except for one teeny, tiny little detail — customers who know can feel that missing magic. That’s the key (for me, anyway) to a successful product, not the amount of money I can make from it, but if it resonates with my customers in the way I intended.
